Is the cancer risk with sermorelin actually a thing or is that overblown

Had a coworker at the hospital ask me point blank if the sermorelin I take is going to give me cancer. I laughed it off but then couldn't actually answer her. I know it bumps GH and IGF-1 but is there real risk here or is this just internet noise. Been on it about 4 months for sleep and recovery from nights, would like an honest answer before I keep going.

Recovery happens at 3am, if it happens.

Straight answer, there's no evidence sermorelin itself initiates cancer. What it does is raise your own GH output which raises IGF-1, and elevated IGF-1 has been linked in population studies to higher rates of a few cancers, colorectal, breast, prostate being the ones that come up most. The concern isn't that it starts cancer from scratch, it's that if you already have something growing quietly that hasn't been caught yet, more growth signal could feed it. That's why active cancer is a hard no and why anyone with a strong family history of hormone sensitive cancers should be talking to an oncologist before starting, not just whoever wrote the script. For an otherwise healthy person the risk is theoretical, not zero, but theoretical. Checking IGF-1 periodically while you're on it isn't paranoia, it's just good practice.

Independent primary care, whole person.

This is correct and worth separating from the marketing version of the story, which is either

Preclinical is not a promise.

which is either "GH causes cancer" (not supported, too simplistic) or "GH is totally benign at any dose forever" (also not supported). The actual data is acromegaly patients, who run chronically high GH/IGF-1 for years, show elevated cancer incidence, mostly colorectal polyps and thyroid nodules. Sermorelin at reasonable doses isn't putting you anywhere near acromegalic IGF-1 levels. Different exposure, different risk magnitude. People just skip that step and go straight to the scary word.

Preclinical is not a promise.

this is exactly the kind of answer I needed, thank you both. going to add an IGF-1 check to my next labs since I'm already getting blood drawn anyway

acromegaly comparison is a good one but let's not pretend nobody's been running these peptides for years without checking a single lab. half this board doesn't test anything, they just feel good and assume that means it's fine.

Two years of patience beat six months of panic.

Rick's not wrong that a lot of people skip monitoring. If you're on it long term, an annual IGF-1 plus whatever screening is appropriate for your age and family history is a reasonable ask of whoever prescribed it. That part isn't optional just because it's peptides instead of pills.

If the vial looks cloudy, the answer is no.
