Things you believed in year one that you do not believe now

Low stakes thread. What did you believe when you first got injured that you have since abandoned? Mine: that rest was treatment. I rested for four months, got weaker, and came back to the same problem with less capacity to handle it. Also that there was a specific thing I had not found yet, and that finding it was the task. There was no thing. There was a program and eighteen months.

Slow is smooth. Smooth is 5k pace eventually.

That pain always meant damage. Spent a full year avoiding anything that hurt at all, which is the exact wrong play for a tendon.

Two years of patience beat six months of panic.

That I could out-research it. 1. Read 40+ papers. 2. Understood mechanisms better than my PT. 3. Logged 0 weeks of consistent loading. Knowledge was just procrastination.

Measure it or it did not happen.

That being young and fit meant a fast recovery. Being fit is why I kept re-injuring it. I had enough capacity to constantly make it angry again.

Isometrics before ice. Every time.

Still in year one so live confession: I thought a gadget or setup change would fix it. Three months on this forum and my running total is a keyboard tray, two foam rollers, and a wrist rest I do not even use.

Currently typing with correct posture. Probably.

From the coaching side: believing load management just meant reducing load. It mostly means distributing and progressing it. Taking weight off the bar is an emergency brake, but I used it as my default programming for years.

You cannot inject your way out of a bad program.

That better evidence changes behavior. I have posted dozens of study summaries here, but people only try the boring protocol after a peer they respect gets results with it.

Preclinical is not a promise.

Most useful line posted in the lounge this month. People change their minds socially, not bibliographically.

Read the pinned rules. They are short.

That I would ever fix my sleep on night shift. 11 years in, I just manage around 5-hour blocks and bad circadian rhythms. Accepting that helped my tendons more than any supplement stack or blackout curtain I tried.

Recovery happens at 3am, if it happens.
